THE CITY
Gdańsk is situated in northern Poland, on the Baltic Sea and more precisely on the coast of Gdańsk Bay. It is a city with over half a million inhabitants and the population of the conurbation exceeding one million people. The history of Gdańsk begins around 2500 BC, when settlement activity in the area of today’s city started. Ten centuries ago, in March 997 the Slavonic name URBS GYDDANYZC was first recorded in The Life of St. Adalbert written in Rome by a monk named John Canaparius.
Throughout the ages Gdańsk has played an important role in the history of both Poland and its neighboring states. The city's convenient location, at the point where Poland's principal river Wisła (the Vistula) meets the Baltic Sea, has shaped the its character and has made it one of the most vibrant centers of trade in this part of Europe.
It is, and has always been very European, too. Testimony to this can be found in its architecture, culture and science. When walking down through the Old Town, you can still see the frescoes and monuments of kings (Kazimierz Jagiellończyk, Zygmunt August, Jan III Sobieski) created centuries ago. In the past many German and Polish settlers made their way to the town, as did the Flemish, the Scots, the Jews, the Dutch, the Italians, the French and the Scandinavians.
Gdańsk and the neighboring cities of Sopot and Gdynia have always attracted open minds due to its spirit of tolerance.
During your stay in Gdańsk, you will probably want to visit something more than just your university room.
The Old Town in Gdańsk has a special atmosphere; you can feel it whenever you take a walk around it. There is the possibility of organizing a guided tour, during which you will be become familiar with details of the history and stories of the city.
In Gdańsk, there are a number of historical objects and places deserving close attention, among them beautiful Gothic churches - Najświętszej Marii Panny (14th - 16th century), Św. Trójcy (14th - 16th century), Św. Katarzyny (13th - 15th), defensive walls with towers from the 15th century, two City Halls - The Main and The Old one (14th - 16th) Dwór Artusa (Artus' Court) - house of the rich bourgeois (16th - 17th), late renaissance tenement houses and gates, e.g. Złota Brama (The Golden Gate), Wielki Arsenał (The Armory), built in 1605, Żuraw (a wooden crane from the 13th century) and Spichlerze (old granaries).

Sopot is a holiday resort and the summer capital of Poland, vibrant with a special atmosphere and artistic spirit. With its wooden pier, the longest of its kind in Europe and extending right into the sea, with its magnificent views, climate and the International Music Festival at the open-air theatre (Opera Leśna), it attracts crowds of visitors from all over the world. In Gdynia, the youngest and most modern of the cities of the Tri-City, you may visit not only the famous and trendy shopping centre in Świętojańska Street, but also the Marine Museum (Museum Morskie) in Kościuszko Square (Skwer Kościuszki), where you can admire sea animals. Dom Abrahama (The house of Antoni Abraham) and The Museum of Gdynia will give you a glimpse of the city from a hundred years ago, when it was a small village. Be sure to take a look at Gdynia from the view point at Kamienna Góra, (The Stony Mountain).
